Real Stories

Our clients come to us with a wide range of elder-care needs: counseling about the the best living arrangements for their parents, intervention on their behalf with a Senior HMO or insurance company, or sometimes, complete oversight and administration of a complex case involving issues beyond basic case management.

Here are some of their stories, and how we helped them. Names have been changed.

  • Candace lived in Chicago, was married with one young daughter, and worked fulltime as a research specialist for a university. Her 76-year-old father lived with a companion in Southern California and his health was declining significantly.
  • Rudy was in his late 70's and was completely dependent upon an electric scooter which was on its last legs, so to speak.
  • Linda was a retired hospital administrator in her early 80s, suffering from several health problems. Her biggest problem, however, was stress from outside - a three-year, ongoing fight with Medicare and with a nursing home, over a bill for $14,665, the cost of her late husband's last days in the nursing home.
  • June, a woman in her late 70s, called us in the midst of a crisis. She had recently placed her husband in a board-and-care facility. He suddenly became so sick she had to put him in a nursing home —temporarily, she thought. Then, she was told he was so sick he would be unable to return home, and would spend the rest of his life in the nursing home.
  • Susan was married, held a full-time job and lived in California. Her father was in his 70s and had a history of a debilitating bipolar condition. He had recently been diagnosed with dementia as well. He was cared for in an assisted living facility.
  • Charlene was married with two children and lived in New Jersey. Her mother was in her early 80's and lived in California near her brother John. John had serious drug and alcohol problems and had drained his mother's investment accounts of almost $100,000 during the previous two years.
